THE CONSUL was composed by Gian-Carlo Menotti and made its debut on March 1, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It would go on to win the New York Drama Critic Circle award as the Best Musical Play of 1950. It would also earn Menotti a Pulitzer Prize.
The opera takes place in an anonymous European totalitarian state and centers around Magda Sorel, a woman whose husband is in hiding from the Secret Police. Magda tries, ultimately, in vain to secure visas to get her husband, infant son, mother-in-law, and herself out of the country before it is too late. This opera will be presented in a semi-staged concert format. 100% of proceeds from donations will go to benefit Catholic Community Services which helps refugees (and others in need) here in Utah and abroad. |
